RACE REPORT 16 SEPTEMBER 2023

Chris Tattersall

Summer Championship Races 3 & 4

PRO James Tudball reports:

There was a lot of heat on Saturday for Races 3 and 4 of the Club Champs... but unfortunately not a lot of wind. At 1PM there was barely a puff on the harbour, so the race team (James Tudball, Tim Heath, Mark Gray and Quentin Burns) opted for a brief onshore postponement to give the wind time to see which direction it wanted to fill from.

At 1:30 we were a bit miffed to see the Squadron had plonked their start line directly in our racing area (along with 30+ Etchells), but we managed to co-exist!

At 2:30 we were underway in about 5 knots from the NNE, showcasing another great fleet size of 40+ Lasers to the rest of the harbour.

All fleets started impeccably well in all races, with nearly every boat perfectly on the line as the guns went.

The breeze was filtering down the harbour in patches, so the front runners in both fleets were those who managed to stay in the pressure upwind, and work strong by-the-lee angles downwind.

Despite the light winds and late start, we managed to have everyone back to shore by 5:30... adequate time to enjoy Paul and Shirley's famous Club Champs BBQ on the deck. This was particularly enjoyable on such a balmy evening!

ILCA 6 (1st / 2nd / 3rd ):

Race 3 results: Sara Bruce / Charles Byford / Martin White

Race 4 results: Sara Bruce / Healy Ryan / Andrew Cox

Shout of the day: The racing was very competitive in the radial fleet. A shout out to Sara Bruce who positioned her boat meticulously in both races. Also to Miles Greenwood in the 4.7s who won both races and sailed extremely well. And a special shout out to our newsletter editor, Chris Tattersall, who jagged a 7th in Race 1.

ILCA 7 (1st / 2nd / 3rd ):

Race 3 results: Zander Bijkerk / Dave Newman / Geoff Kirk

Race 4 results: Zander Bijkerk / Julian Taylor / Geoff Kirk

Shout of the Day: Zander demonstrated superior boat speed and top light wind technique and tactics to win both races. A shout out to Dave Newman for pushing Zander in Race 1 and to Geoff Kirk for sailing consistently across both races in the tricky conditions. Also Max Djura, who sailed well in Race 2 to claim a 9th. Max crossed the line and gave himself a big cheer. We absolutely loved seeing that.

A parting note in regard to the Sailor App. Tim Heath and Tuddy had some challenges scoring finishers in the first race via the app, due to the fleets compressing and crossing the line at the same time. The task was particularly difficult for them as a number of sailors had not signed on via the app. Luke Parker's paragraph in the newsletter from back in April is still incredibly salient:

“This was the first time your correspondent has used the new App for race management. It’s a fantastic product that makes the process on the start boat simple and results are immediate. However for the system to work, all sailors must sign on via the Sailor App with the correct sail number. This is critical. The club has been lenient with laggards who don’t sign on correctly this season. This leniency has an impost on our volunteers. On Saturday it took the handicapper and commodore considerable time to manually enter results for sailors that didn’t sign on properly.”

So, don’t be surprised if the goodwill ceases: PLEASE SIGN ON CORRECTLY!

Twilight Sailing Program - Thursdays

Chris Tattersall

As per last weeks Newsletter - Thursdays:

We have decided to shift our main twilight night to Thursdays as part of a three month trial, kicking off on Thursday 5 October, listed on our club's calendar as Twilight Racing. 5pm splash, 5:30pm start on water. There will be an on-water coach to facilitate the racing, and to provide group coaching for those members who sign up.

We will keep Wednesday as an informal sailing activity kicking off on Wednesday 4 October, listed on our club's calendar as Twilight Sailing.

How do I book for the Thursday Twilight Racing Program?

Members are encouraged to book and pay if they intend to sail semi-regularly on Thursdays, the charge of $120 covers the 12 Thursdays from October to December, (which is about $10 per session) and will help the club cover the costs of having the coach on water and setting the course.

Members are still able to attend Twilight sailing free of charge (without access to the coach). There will be a windward - leeward course with short races and/or drills.

RACE REPORT 9 SEPTEMBER 2023

Chris Tattersall

SPRING POINTSCORE Races 1 & 2

Last Saturday was a near perfect day to be on Sydney Harbour with 53+ boats getting on the water.

When the race crew made our way out around lunch time to lay some marks, the breeze was a 10 – 12 kt westerly north of Clark Island and some steep shifts around to the south west coming out of Rushcutters Bay. With the breeze predicted to make its way around to the south around start time and then roll slightly further east late in the afternoon, we hedged our bets and set up for a south-south westerly, hoping that we’d have only some minor adjustments to make just prior to 2pm.

That plan went to custard when the sea breeze gods made an early appearance and instead dialled in a modest south easterly and leaving the start crew scrambling to find some sense and sensibility. At 2pm, the AP flag was woken from its winter slumber while things were brought back to order and a course up into the Dardanelles was laid. The start line was set and racing kicked off around 20 minutes later than usual, in a breeze of about 8 to 12 knots.

The combined Radial and 4.7 fleet wanted to make up for lost time, which prompted a general recall before a clean start under a black flag. The Standards contained their enthusiasm and got away cleanly with both fleets on their way toward ‘Bethwaite Point’ around 2:30PM in Race 1.

Race 2 was underway just after 3:30PM and, aside from an individual recall in the Radial/4.7 fleet, both starts were clean.

Watching the large fleet get to the bottom mark with the Harbour Bridge in the background and a falling sun casting a golden glow over the harbour really shows why Double Bay Sailing Club is the best sailing club in the world. As for the stars of the day, Edward Alexander took out Race 1 in the radial fleet for both fastest and corrected time, while Charlotte Jenkins got the double in the 4.7 fleet. Tim Heath crossed the line first on corrected time with Daniel Costandi getting the line honours in the standard fleet.

In Race 2, James Gosling won on corrected time and Sylvie Stannage claimed fastest time in the Radial fleet, while Ben Costandi got the double in the 4.7 fleet. In the Standards, Yves Stenning showed plenty of form to secure the win on corrected time and Otto Henry snuck in just 4 seconds in front of Campbell Patton to claim line honours.

Many thanks to PRO Murray Stone, who was magnificently assisted by Richard “Richo” Holstein and (a rehabilitating) Mike Dunne on the Jazzman, and special thanks to Trevor Potts and James Hayhoe on the Bergman for nailing the course.

Shirley managed the canteen with help from Juliet Piggin with Tim Heath and Conor Kellett.

Twilight Sailing Program - October to December

Our Twilight Sailing is ramping up! Wednesday and Thursday

After an extensive survey of our current twilight sailors in relation to our club's twilight sailing program, we have decided to shift our main twilight night to Thursdays as part of a three month trial, kicking off on Thursday 5 October, listed on our club's calendar as Twilight Racing.

What about Wednesdays?

We will keep Wednesday as an informal sailing activity kicking off on Wednesday 4 October, listed on our club's calendar as Twilight Sailing.

Why the change?

There was strong support for Thursdays as the preferred night among the existing twilight sailors, particularly due to the safety issues surrounding the CYC big boats on Wednesdays. On Thursdays, our section of the harbour is significantly less crowded.

This extra space on the harbour will also enable us to set a windward - leeward course, which will bring some positive on-water structure to our Thursday twilight racing. Coaches were also available on Thursday afternoon.

So what is the structure of Thursdays?

After discussing the plans at committee, we have decided to organise an on-water coach to facilitate the racing and to provide group coaching. The coach will be one of our experienced Reach coaches. As such, our Thursday twilights will be officially referred to as Twilight Racing.

  • We will aim for our usual splash of 5PM. The coach and course will be ready for racing by 5:30PM

  • The course will be typically windward - leeward (like our sprint racing), however the coach may communicate variations out on the water,
...to keep us on our toes.

  • Racing will run until sundown, approx 7:30PM.

  • Regular Thursday night dinner and drinks at The Oak following sailing, for anyone who fancies a social outing.

How much will the Thursday Twilight Racing cost?

As a club, we will have the overhead of paying the coach each week to set the course and provide the coaching, so there will be a fee of $10 per session, $120 for the three months (plus merchant fees). We would hope that anyone who plans to sail/race more than a few Thursdays would support the program by committing to all three months.

However, members who sail occasionally are still very welcome to join in on the racing each Thursday free of charge.

How do I book for the Thursday Twilight Racing Program?

We have set up a booking link for the Thursday Twilight Racing, click the button below to book and to find out more information.

We will continue Wednesday Twilight Sailing

We know that there is still strong interest amongst some of our key members to sail on Wednesday evenings during summer. As a result, we will keep Wednesday as an informal sailing activity and this will be listed on our club's calendar as “Twilight Sailing”.

Additionally, committee will reevaluate the Thursday Twilight Racing together with all members, as the three month trial unfolds. Our 2024 summer Twilight Program will therefore be confirmed later this year, once we have reviewed the trial.

Recycling Old Sails

Chris Tattersall

If you are starting to accumulate a heap of old sails that you no longer use, we encourage all members to recycle these. Recycled sails are made into motorbike covers, surfboard covers and bike bags, fashionable carry bags, sails for fisherman in the South Pacific, or are resold to leisure sailors through Sail Exchange..

Geoff Kirk is very kindly collecting these, so either give them to him directly at the clubhouse or contact him at gdfkirk@gmail.com.

First Aid Training 23 September

Chris Tattersall

We encourage all members to obtain First Aid Certification and to this end we have arranged an expert trainer (Brian Richards) to run a course at the club on Saturday, 23 September for members. The course is intensive, and is designed for those with no prior first aid training, as well as those wanting to update their skills and keep their certification current. It will start at 07:00 and will finish by noon, to allow those attending to race in the afternoon.

The Club will pay for the cost of members attending the course, so book now, there is a maximum of 20 on the day.

If you want to attend this course, you must email David Murphy (davidmurphy@dbsc.com.au) by Monday 18 September. If you would like to receive this training but cannot make it on the 23rd, please indicate this in your email.

RACE REPORT 2 SEPTEMBER 2023

Club Championship Races 1 & 2

Saturday was the opening of our 2023-24 sailing season and the gods/godesses dished up sunny skies and a beautiful 12-18 knot oscillating southerly. We don’t get the harbour to ourselves very often, but it seems the slight chill in the air kept other boat traffic to a minimum.  Other than one general recall, both fleets were well behaved on the start line, which was surprising given it was the first club championship heat of the year. Plenty of young sailing talent was on show, some returning from the recent ILCA Open Worlds, the U21 Europeans and the 4.7 Youth Worlds in Greece.  They were looking sharp but still plenty of masters sailors were in the hunt. PRO Mike Dunne reports:

Beautiful wind… irrespective of the direction… just great to have our first championship race day with an atypical southerly. And even better that it wasn’t a monster breeze. It oscillated between SW to SE: being at the right place at the right time made some sailors legends, and conversely… The game of snakes and ladders was on!

Setting the course was, as always, a fun experience…  Left or right, what’s happening now v. what might happen in a few minutes.  We basically chose the middle ground and set a southerly course. On the principle that perfection is the enemy of the good, we decided to go for good.

There were 43 boats across the 3 fleets. Only a couple of 4.7’s, so they started with the Radials.  The racing was good, and it was enjoyable to see close, competitive battles within the fleets, and also how different strategies and tactics played out.  No quarter was offered, and mistakes were costly.

Race 1 Radial:  Yep, we messed up the start…  That was on us in the start boat, a combination of sound signals and flag failures, we were definitely rusty.  The RC decided to start over to give everyone a fair go.  Once we got going, however, both fleets behaved well. I think the tide helped as not many racers being pushed over the start.

 ILCA 6 (1st /2nd /3rd ):

Race 1 results: Sylvie Stannage / Martin White / Healy Ryan

Race 2 results: Sylvie Stannage / Peter Heywood / Healy Ryan

Shout of the day: The racing was very competitive for 2nd place in the radials, with Sylvie dominating both races, showing that her summer in Europe was not misspent. Big call out to Peter Heywood for challenging and nabbing 2nd in Race 2.

 ILCA 7 (1st /2nd /3rd ):

Race 1 results: Campbell Patton/ Dave Newman / Luke Parker

Race 2 results: Otto Henry / Daniel Costandi / Campbell Patton

Shout of the Day:  Huge shift to the right at start of Race 1, with Luke enjoying a refreshing dip, so that we were stunned to see him first at the bottom mark.

Thanks to the on-water crew of Mike Dunne & Rod Barnes on the start boat, with Richard George & Scott Finlayson on Paul Adam, with Ben Byford and David Evenden on Bergman. And of course thanks to Shirley in the canteen with help from Nick Pellow and Josh Dorey.
