Our Twilight Sailing is ramping up! Wednesday and Thursday

After an extensive survey of our current twilight sailors in relation to our club's twilight sailing program, we have decided to shift our main twilight night to Thursdays as part of a three month trial, kicking off on Thursday 5 October, listed on our club's calendar as Twilight Racing.

What about Wednesdays?

We will keep Wednesday as an informal sailing activity kicking off on Wednesday 4 October, listed on our club's calendar as Twilight Sailing.

Why the change?

There was strong support for Thursdays as the preferred night among the existing twilight sailors, particularly due to the safety issues surrounding the CYC big boats on Wednesdays. On Thursdays, our section of the harbour is significantly less crowded.

This extra space on the harbour will also enable us to set a windward - leeward course, which will bring some positive on-water structure to our Thursday twilight racing. Coaches were also available on Thursday afternoon.

So what is the structure of Thursdays?

After discussing the plans at committee, we have decided to organise an on-water coach to facilitate the racing and to provide group coaching. The coach will be one of our experienced Reach coaches. As such, our Thursday twilights will be officially referred to as Twilight Racing.

• We will aim for our usual splash of 5PM. The coach and course will be ready for racing by 5:30PM

• The course will be typically windward - leeward (like our sprint racing), however the coach may communicate variations out on the water,
  ...to keep us on our toes.

• Racing will run until sundown, approx 7:30PM.

• Regular Thursday night dinner and drinks at The Oak following sailing, for anyone who fancies a social outing.

How much will the Thursday Twilight Racing cost?

As a club, we will have the overhead of paying the coach each week to set the course and provide the coaching, so there will be a fee of $10 per session, $120 for the three months (plus merchant fees). We would hope that anyone who plans to sail/race more than a few Thursdays would support the program by committing to all three months.

However, members who sail occasionally are still very welcome to join in on the racing each Thursday free of charge.

We will continue Wednesday Twilight Sailing

We know that there is still strong interest amongst some of our key members to sail on Wednesday evenings during summer. As a result, we will keep Wednesday as an informal sailing activity and this will be listed on our club's calendar as “Twilight Sailing”.

Additionally, committee will reevaluate the Thursday Twilight Racing together with all members, as the three month trial unfolds. Our 2024 summer Twilight Program will therefore be confirmed later this year, once we have reviewed the trial.
