2023/24 Season Opening BBQ

Steven London

The Season Opener Barbie was a great success with many brilliant conversations, and members, partners and parents chatting into the evening, and maybe the odd drink was enjoyed. Thanks for the great food and atmosphere, wonderful to catch up with everyone, and thank you to Diana Chen and Peter Collie for arranging the food, and to Shirley and all those who helped on the day.

Congratulations to Brooke Wilson who is a finalist in Australian Sailing's NSW Female Sailor of the Year award.  Brooke has had an incredible year with fantastic results in the ILCA 6, both domestically and internationally.  She has also had a string of success in the Elliot 7s Match Racing here in Australia, and in America and Europe.  Congratulations Brooke and good luck at the awards night on September 16.

First Aid Training 23 September

Chris Tattersall

We encourage all members to obtain First Aid Certification and to this end we have arranged an expert trainer (Brian Richards) to run a course at the club on Saturday, 23 September for members. The course is intensive, and is designed for those with no prior first aid training, as well as those wanting to update their skills and keep their certification current. It will start at 07:00 and will finish by noon, to allow those attending to race in the afternoon.

The Club will pay for the cost of members attending the course, so book now, there is a maximum of 20 on the day.

If you want to attend this course, you must email David Murphy (davidmurphy@dbsc.com.au). (If you would like to receive this training but cannot make it on the 23rd, please indicate this in your email).

RACE REPORT 26 AUGUST 2023

WINTER Sprint Racing - FINAL DAY

PRO Mike Dunne reports:

The start of the day sucked, just old-fashioned sucked. No wind, no direction, no idea. We got it wrong setting the course. Tried to work to the prediction...

Starting outside the bay, it turns out, doesn’t work. It was a learning thing. During Race 1 everything (and everyone) was all over the shop.  For Race 2, we went back to basics and set the weather mark in Double Bay and that totally rocked! So, 5 races in total, 4 amazing races, let’s call the 1st the ‘canary in the coal mine’. We rocked and maybe we rolled! 🤣 All in all, a spectacular day on (and sometimes in) our amazing harbour.. Approx 30 boats, mostly Radials... great racing and so much fun. Very special talent on display, so many winners and very few losers, it seriously offered a learning opportunity.

Sprints are brilliant, everyone goes hard, and totally learns and ultimately that's the whole point. As the day progressed, the best sailors...  well, you guys did what you usually do 🤣. Overall...  perfect end to an amazing sprint series...  thank you!! Totally looking forward to what’s next. Game on!!!

Thanks to the on-water crew: Mike Dunne as PRO ably supported by John Vasey and Michelle Power. Kerryn Smith was COTD with Ben Byford in the RIB.

Thanks to Paul and Shirley in the canteen with help from Tim Heath.

Club Championship Racing this Saturday 2 September

Steven London

The Skippers briefing will be at 13:00, with first warning signal at 14:00, and as usual we will run two Summer Championship races.

Note to all our new members: we will be using the regular DBSC “triangle, sausage, sausage” course, with the finish to windward after the last bottom mark rounding, and the Finish Mark is set to starboard of the committee boat.

Separate 5-minute fleet starts (5,4,1,0) with ILCA 4 & ILCA 6 combined if there are less than six ILCA 4 at the start line. Please refer to Sailing Instructions for all the details.

You will need to sign-on using the Sailor app — this is mandatory if you want to be scored. Download instructions are HERE.

3 spots left - Don’t miss out, this is your last chance to book your place in the Brett Beyer Saturday Program.

The program comprises individualised on-water tips before and after racing and between races, as well as a video of the start, and a GPS animation and accompanying analysis that shows your tracks and stats vs the other participants in the fleet on a leg-by-leg basis, with commentary on fleet and/or selected individual performances on each leg. It also includes the opportunity to ask Brett questions during the week, between BBSP sessions.

Working Bee

Chris Tattersall

Vice Commodore Rod Barnes directing the work…

Thankyou to all members who attended the annual working bee. A very respectable turnout of 57 members helped out in last Saturday, and with the fine weather, this group tackled the following tasks:

  • Replacing some of the deck timbers

  • Scraping and repainting facia boards on the north gable (above the deck)

  • Replacing some of the cladding boards (including painting)

  • Sweeping shed floor beneath the Laser racks

  • Replacing rack beams on the east side, creating a little more vertical clearance

  • De-cluttering and cleaning the workshop, including replacing fluorescent tubes

  • Repairing wheels and replacing noodles on the club trolleys (including the stacking “away” trolleys)

  • Pressure washing the ramp

  • Collecting, sorting and fixing components of the training boats (centreboards, rudders, tillers, spars)

  • Checking and updating first aid and rescue packs

Thanks to Rod for planning and directing the operation, as well as carting away a lot of the rubbish. And for Paul and Shirley in the kitchen (and in particular for the brownies).

Also, as special shout out to those that stayed very late to put away a significant number of boats that had been left on the rigging lawn.
