A WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR
Jon West Photography specialises in on-water photography for sailing regattas.

Jon was the official photographer for the 2020 Men's and Women's Laser Worlds, as well as the Australian Laser Nationals, all held in Melbourne earlier this year. The series culminated in the Laser Masters in Geelong in March at which time social distancing came into effect, regrettably cutting the event short before the 2020 Laser Master Worlds could begin.

With a passion for the ocean, Jon has spent the lockdown months perfecting his art of capturing the moment; complete with rough seas and a multitude of local pro surfers!

Now looking forward to getting back to competitive sailing regattas, Jon can't wait to capture the spirit of The Women's Regatta, with Sydney's iconic landmarks as the backdrop.

The Women's Regatta Notice of Race (NOR) is LIVE!

Please note, due to the current COVID-19 public health advice and the safety plan adopted by Double Bay Sailing Club, the format of the regatta will be different from previous years.

As detailed in the NOR, the entry fee covers the cost of the sailing competition which includes 2 days of racing. Ten (10) races are scheduled of which four (4) shall be completed to constitute a series. If permitted, and we are in a position to host other activities such as yoga, land-based classroom sessions, a dinner function, and presentations, then these activities will be included in the fee that is being charged.

We will keep you up-to-date via The Women's Regatta Newsletter as we advise steps for delivering you the best experience possible under these circumstances. Thank you for your understanding and for signing up to be part of this important women's sailing event.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions about the NOR or the registration process at events@dbsc.com.au or 0409 391 304 (Clare Alexander, Event Secretary).

The countdown is on!

With less than 10 weeks to go, The Women's Regatta committee are working hard behind the scenes to prepare for an exhilarating weekend of racing on Sydney Harbour, so keep your eyes peeled for the Notice of Race this week.

The priority is to deliver a safe, inclusive, and fun regatta, so we are fine tuning the last bits and pieces to adapt to the current Public Health restrictions.

In the meantime, there is so much to learn about sailing the Laser with plenty of inspiration on the internet.

Tip of the Week

Want to know what makes it easier to sail the boat, and faster?

On a Laser, you have only a few trim lines you can adjust during sailing. You can change the shape and therefore the power in your sail with the Sheet, Vang, Outhaul, and the Cunningham. Each option will change the draft (shape/depth) of your sail and therefore the power your sail will generate.

The Cunningham has the most influence on the top part of the sail. Therefore in strong winds, it is one of the most important trim line to set-up your sail correctly. Flattening the top of the sail, means less power, where the wind has the most leverage to push your boat over. This makes it easier to sail the boat, and faster!

Read more HERE.

Check out how to adjust the Cunningham in the video below.

Thanks for signing up to receive news about The Women’s Regatta 2020. We’re all a little bit excited as it’s just over 10 weeks, or 72 days to be exact until we hit the water

We’re working hard on finalising the Notice of Race which should be published very soon, so stay tuned. If you haven’t already completed the Expression of Interest form, please do so HERE. The information you provide will help us in the planning of the regatta and ensure that it’s a good one.

Tip of the Week

Have you ever wondered how to make a Laser go faster or how to get off the start line with clear air or even how to roll tack in light winds?

The Laser is a challenging boat that rewards athleticism, subtle steering and trimming techniques, as well as tactical excellence and because its a One Design class means that, in theory, whether you have a new boat or one 10 years old, winning a race comes down to the sailor not the boat.

Based on your feedback, each week we are going to share some 'tips and tricks' to sailing the Laser. Things you might be able to practise in your training program in the lead up to The Women's Regatta that could give you a competitive advantage to winning one of those special pink medals in September.
In preparation for getting back into your Laser after a winter break, it might be a good time to go over your boat. There is nothing worse than breaking things during a regatta or finding out you are carrying extra water due to a leak in the boat, so it might be time to service your boat. Learn how to do it HERE.
Did you know there are dos and don'ts to washing ropes? Watch this!
