Thursday Twilights - Wild Westerly

Steven London

Ten keen sailors ventured out for our first Thursday Twilight Race of the season. The wind was gusty and shifty, and provided plenty of opportunity to dust of the cobwebs and build fitness for the season ahead. We virtually had the Harbour to ourselves - what a spectacular sunset!
Thankyou to our coach Brooke Wilson and James Tudball. Members wishing to sign-up for the Thursday on water coaching please click HERE

Mini Club Clean-up - This Saturday

Chris Tattersall

We are so excited that the club is full of regular racing members this season. As there are more sailors using the club, as well as the 18-Footers and club hires, we ask all members to try and keep the club tidy at all times. Please store all personal belongings with your boat or take them home with you each week. This includes the change rooms, shared spaces, and all nooks and crannies.

This Saturday (14 October) we will be doing a mini spring clean before racing. This means any clothing, sails, spars etc. left lying around will be deemed lost property and dealt with accordingly. We appreciate your assistance on this and hope that you can treat the club as your own home, for the enjoyment of all other members.

ILCA Masters Worlds Training

Chris Tattersall

For those DNSC members going to Adelaide early Feb 2024 for the Laser Masters Worlds (and also those who are not), a number of DBSC Master members who are going to the Adelaide LMW, plus other sailors from overseas (ITA FRA GBR & USA to date), have expressed interest in training out of DBSC beforehand.

Mark Bethwaite has offered to run sprint races on the afternoons of Sun 28, Mon 29, Tues 30, and Wed 31 Jan.  Overseas Masters may also join our racing on Sat 27 Jan, subject to boats being available.

 Actions:

  • Would those interested in joining this pre-LMW training, please email rodbarnes@dbsc.com.au

  • Would those interested in chartering their hull, spars and foils to overseas Masters for AUD50 per day, also please email rodbarnes@dbsc.com.au. Please also indicate if your boat is available for charter Sat 27 Jan.

Mark has offered to:

  • Allocate boats between DBSC charterers and overseas visitors

  • Run sprint racing - 3pm through 5.30pm Sun 28 through Wed 31 Jan

  • Ensure boats are returned in original condition to owners.

Mark will need a couple of volunteers, one to join him on the Adam and another to drive the Bergman for mark laying and safety requirements.  Please email rodbarnes@dbsc.com.au if you are available.

Looking forward to a few days of intensive training to sharpen our skills prior to Adelaide.

RACE REPORT 30 SEPTEMBER 2023

Chris Tattersall

October Long Weekend Sprints

Steven London reports:

Saturday was a spectacular bright and sunny day, the wind was 10 knots, gusting 15 from NNE, perfect conditions for about 30 sailors who competed in our October Long Weekend Sprints. (and a few 18 footers were also seen in practice for their coming season.)

Three races were started at 2pm sharp, a long course for Sprints, with the start set in Double Bay and the top mark was midway between the Bradley’s Head clearwater mark and Shark Island.

In the first race, Campbell Patton aced the Standards, and Evie Saunders was first in the radials, and Diana Chen lead the 4.7s.

Race two had the same leaders, Campbell Patton, Evie Saunders, Diana Chen dominating their respective fleets.

By race three the wind was gusting to 18 knots at times, and there was chop and waves to deal with, Daniel Costandi was first in the standards, Connor Kellett first in the radials, and Jacqui Winship in the 4.7s

Thankyou Race Team: Steven London PRO, John Vassey LTRaR, Andrew Foote COTD, Jeremy Vives CoCOTD, and also to Paul and Shirley for running the Canteen assisted by Max Djura and Grant Lovelady.

RACE REPORT 23 SEPTEMBER 2023

Chris Tattersall

Spring Point Score Races 3 & 4

Luke Parker reports:

A 5 to 8 knot-ish easterly greeted a fantastic fleet of over 50 Lasers for a sunny day’s racing last Saturday.

The course was set in the channel towards Point Piper and Shark Island, and, as usual, the “Dardanelles” provided numerous opportunities and challenges for sailors. (For new players the Dardanelles, also known as the Strait of Gallipoli, is a narrow, natural strait and internationally significant waterway in northwestern Turkey that forms part of the continental boundary between Asia and Europe).

It was “a thinking sailor’s breeze” as shifts and gusts came in from both directions and it was especially important to keep eyes out of the boat both upwind and downwind. Coach Brett summed it up by advising that one simply needed either to be on the favoured tack or in a gust. Easier said than done.

Starters were very well behaved.  No generals. Good work, team.

Winners on the Day

Race 3

ILCA 4 (4.7): Miles Greenwood

ILCA 6 (Radial): Michael Morris

ILCA 7 (Standard): Yves Stenning (Attention, Mr Handicapper: this is his 2nd win in a row.)

Race 4

ILCA 4 (4.7): Ben Costandi

ILCA 6 (Radial): Scott Finlayson

ILCA 7 (Standard): Maxim Dura

Another gentle reminder… you need to sign on via the Sailor App if you want your results to count. Also, don’t double-tap the sign on button or you will simultaneously sign on and off (as I did).

Many thanks to Rod Barnes, who despite a bad back graciously stepped in to PRO the day and allowed your correspondent to sail. Also, thanks to the on-water dream team of John Vasey, Mark Crowhurst and Richard McLachlan.

First Aid Training at DBSC Last Saturday

Steven London

Thankyou to Brian Richards from 24/7 First Aid for providing members with an excellent training course covering CPR and First Aid. 18 members attended and were trained in what to do in situations that arise requiring First Aid, including using the Defibrillator (AED), bandages and tourniquets, and of course CPR practice on the manikins. There was also about and hour of online content beforehand. Thanks also to our own medico David Murphy for organizing the day, and all the members who got involved to update their First Aid accreditation last Saturday.
