Winter Championship & Point Score series - Races 19, 20 & 21

A grim wind and weather forecast didn't stop 25+ sailors showing up for races 19, 20 & 21 of the winter series. After a short postponement, we got Race 19 underway in a little SW breeze which quickly faded across the course leading to a drifter finish at the top mark on the second lap.

After a short wait, the breeze filled in again and we got underway with Race 20 with a shorter course and isolating and slowly building breeze. By Race 21 we had good pressure as the southerly started to fill in.

The ICLA 6's saw a win to Ian Alexander & two to Andrew Cox. In the pointscore, Benjamin Costandi took a win in Race 19 & 21, and Andrew Cox in Race 20. In the ILCA 7's Luke Parker, Patrick Black & Geoff Boscoe split the wins in the championship. Luke Parker, Joshua Dorey & Geoff Boscoe took the wins in pointscore. David Airey and Maxim Djura take the lead into the final weekend of the winter series after a break for most of July.

Some words of encouragement from Andrew Stransky:

Come one come all, it’s happening! Blow away those winter chills, dust off your trusty ILCA dinghy and set your sights on the Queensland Winter ILCA Regatta! Muster your energy and join the age old tradition of competing in the world’s most popular dinghy class. Racing among friends, the thrilling competition is always tight, regardless of where you are in the flight. Tone up those begging muscles in this 2 day, 5 race series, all for a paltry $50 entry fee, a bargain for the taking.

Step right up, you are all invited to enter, whatever your sex or age, come one, come all, this is an open regatta! Bask in warm sunshine on the inviting grounds of the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, while rigging up your trusty stead! Catch up with friends, make friends and be part of the splendid challenge of mastering sail. Out on the fresh waters of Waterloo Bay, apply your best efforts to push each other to even greater heights. Enjoy the fascinating interplay of sails, ropes, hulls and foils as we all strive to use the wind to our advantage and complete the course at our best speed.

Take part in the thrill of the hike, the rock and roll, hanging five in that effort to keep a small wave alive! Test your wits as you place your bets on which way the wind will roll the dice, calm as ice, in that beautiful winter light. Leap out of your chair and exclaim to the air “I’ll get my entry in right now!” If you don’t have a boat but are excited to join, no doubt you can beg or borrow one! What better way to spend two winter’s days, testing your skills and caressing the breeze. So why not get out your calender and ink in July 13th and 14th, to spend some time simply mucking about in boats!

Winter Championship & Point Score series - Races 16, 17, 18

Grant Lovelady (PRO) Reports:

After Saturday’s soggy downpour you would be excused for thinking Sunday was going to be a repeat and a lie-in the better option. We arrived early for a crisp winter morning and beautiful Sydney Harbour mostly to ourselves, along with a few high-speed water skiers and a peloton of kayakers: 20-plus hardy ILCA /Laser sailors including a few visitors.

Breeze was W, WSW at 10-13 knots and we set a course with the top mark just off Clark Island and the bottom mark off Point Piper.

R1 set the day up with nice left shifts but the right had the pressure. The story for the day was to manage the oscillating shifts, sometimes 20+ degrees and connecting the pressure lines.

R2 saw the Radial/4.7 fleet very keen to test the PRO, but to no avail — we were not going to deploy the 1st substitute flag. Up came code flag X individual recall and 5 boats were called. Only 2 returned correctly.

R3 the rain looked like it was coming in and the breeze clocking to the south. A wise decision under the conditions meant we kept the same course but rotated the line. This made for a good tactical play, and shifts a plenty.

Winners for the day were:

ILCA 6 Radials – Roberto Blum, Andrew Cox, Ian Alexander

ILCA 7 Standards – Maxim Djura and Tim Heath (2 wins)

Thanks to the on-water crew of John Sweeny & Van Allen on the Dene Bergman setting the course and Ben & Charlie Byford on the Jazzman with PRO & LTRaR. Result thanks to Geoffrey Boscoe.

A reminder please to sign on, with the correct sail number. This helps the race management team, safety and of course you get included in the results.

Winter Racing – Races 13, 14 & 15

Rod Barnes (PRO) Reports:

Sunday was a sensational day on the Harbour.  After a rainy few days, we turned up to clear blue skies, crisp and cold conditions and, like most other Sundays in winter, a relatively clear Harbour. It’s such a contrast to those busy summer days and there is a huge reward if you can just get out from under the doona.

There were a few stragglers, but by the time the second race came around, there was more than 30 boats on the water.  We welcomed a few visitors from Middle Harbour and Vaucluse and it was a fantastic effort from all who attended.

Thanks to the on-water crew of Craig Ryan, Andrew Craker and Andrew Foote. With a couple of tweaks to the course, we were racing with a beautiful WSW breeze ranging from 14 to 21 knots.

In the ILCA 6 class, James Gosling had a great day in the point score finishing with two firsts and a second, and in the Championships, Healy Ryan dominated the fleet.

Patrick Black also had a good day in the ILCA 7 point score finishing with two firsts and a third, and in the championships, Luke Parker, Quentin Burns and Nick Pellow all had wins.
