Race report 14 May 2023

From our PRO Nick Pellow:

There was a strong turnout of over 30 lasers for the first 3 races of the DBSC Winter Series.  Racing kicked off slightly behind schedule due to many boats being late to leave the club. Due to the possibility of the wind dying during Winter Series, the PRO and Race Committee try to keep the races punctual.

Thank you to everyone who signed-on, ensuring you received Points for rising and shining at such a fresh hour.

It should be noted signing on is now compulsory for all DBSC races if you wish to get a result. You can alert the Committee Boat on the water if you forgot for the day, however you have to have registered on the Sailor App - https://www.dbsc.com.au/sailor-sign-on-app at least once.

The breeze remained a fairly constant Westerly of about 5-7 knots across all 3 races, the sun shone the entire time even with threatening storm clouds surrounding the natural amphitheatre and colosseum where do battle each week - that is Double Bay.

The race committee were paid a visit by Sydney Harbour’s famous Water Rats during on-water proceedings - to check that we had not forgotten to wish our mothers a Happy Mother’s Day on such a glorious morning.

Well done to all sailors on the day. Results are available in the Sailor app and online.

Great results for Double Bay sailors at Garda

Congratulations to Sylvie Stannage and Finn Alexander, standout performances at the 2023 Europa Cup at Riva del Garda, with Sylvie taking out a win in the final race to put her in 4th overall in the ILCA 6s, and Finn consistently challenging the Peruvian leader to take out a convincing 2nd place in the ILCA 7s.

Winter youth sailing

Guest User

James Tudball reports:

DBSC is heating up with youth sailing this winter!

Our Reach Youth Committee is excited to be launching an 8 week youth coaching program over winter.  The program framework is being provided by Josh Becker (who joined DBSC in January) in conjunction with our DBSC Reach Youth Coaches. It consists of 4 weekends sailing out on Double Bay, working toward and attending the June long weekend 2023 East Coast Youth Championships at GRSC, then 3 weekends after the regatta to fine tune skills.
We thank Josh and our youth coaches for their passion and efforts to get this winter program launched, and to be firing up our youth sailing more broadly at the club. We’d also like to thank our commodore for his enthusiastic support to get this activated, which has been pivotal.

Our youth coaching team consists of members Dan Costandi, Paige Caldecoat, Sylvie Stannage, Zander Bijkerk, Brooke Wilson, Campbell Patton, Finn Alexander, and now Josh Becker.  Our team of coaches will ensure we can run ongoing youth activities throughout the year amidst our coaches' own busy (and successful!) campaign schedules.
This winter the youth program will take place on Saturday mornings, kicking off this weekend. They will also race in our DBSC Winter Series on Sundays, and later have a theory session and debrief in the club.
The program has around a dozen youth members signed up, and a number of these sailors are new members, and storing their boat at the club!  ... so if you see them in the club or out on the start line, please give them a smile and make them feel welcome!

Race report 29 April 2023

From our PRO Michael Osborne:

Club Championships 15 and 16 were held in about 6 knots of breeze from the south west – just enough to conduct two challenging races for the 30 sailors competing.

It rained in the morning.  For all of the afternoon there were rain clouds to the west of the city, but the rain never made it to the race track, and that may have contributed to the surprising consistency of such a light breeze throughout the afternoon.

The winners of Race 1 were David Airey in the Radials and Rob Vann in the Standards.

The second race winners were Sarah Bruce and Jules Hall.

Thanks to Chris Tattersall and Mark Gray in the Adam – they had to replace two marks in the course of the afternoon which they did without any interference to the racing.   Thanks also to John Vasey on the Jazzman.

Results are available in the Sailor app and online.

No racing this weekend

This is a reminder there are no races on the weekend of the 6th and 7th of May.

We have now finished another amazing year of Sailing in 2022-23 and are having a short break before we start our 2023 Winter Championship Racing program on Sunday 14 May.
