Race report 16 April 2023 (and a little rant)

From our PRO Luke Parker…

Champagne racing on the harbour for Saturday’s final two heats of the Autumn point score!

The 33 boat fleet enjoyed a 10 knot nor Easter that built to a tad over 15 by the end of the second race. Tide was incoming, traffic was sparse, and the sun was shining. It simply doesn’t get better.  This season we’ve been enjoying much better late season conditions than we did in 2021 and 2022. Perhaps the benefit of being freed from La Niña’s impact?

Both fleets were impeccably behaved at the starts and all races started cleanly with the fleets spread across the line.  Upwind, most sailors played the right hand side of the course to avoid the incoming tide and play the shifts that form around Point Piper.  Downwind appeared to be about hunting waves and gusts.

In the Radials, John Verco won the 1st race.  Andrew Cox came 2nd in the first race, and 1st in the 2nd.

In the full rigs, Quentin Burns won the first, Maxim Djura the 2nd and a shoutout to Connor for placing 2nd in both races.

I’ll leave for others to expand on the Autumn pointscore’s results, but here’s a spoiler…. expect to see a very happy Commodore at the AGP.

An observation of the Sailor App…

This was the first time your correspondent has used the new App for race management. It’s a fantastic product that makes the process on the start boat simple and results are immediate. However for the system to work, all sailors must Sign on via the Sailor App with the correct sail number. This is critical.   The club has been lenient with laggards who don’t sign on correctly this season.  This leniency has an impost on our volunteers. On Saturday it took the handicapper and commodore considerable time to manually enter results for sailors that didn’t sign on properly.

Don’t be surprised if the outpouring of goodwill ceases: PLEASE SIGN ON CORRECTLY!!!!!

Here’s a link to the app and the process. https://www.dbsc.com.au/sailor-sign-on-app

If you forget to sign on before launching, there is capacity to sign on at the start boat before racing, but not to change your sail number.

Finally….an open question to the sailing committee:  Is the winter series the ideal time to enforce a zero tolerance policy to signing on? No sign on = no result!

[Results are available in the Sailor app and online.]

Learn to Race wraps up for another season

The ‘Learn to Race’ final session for the year was sailed in perfect weather, which was the catalyst for a big turnout of 12 boats, 6 of which were Club members with their own boats, wanting to build up their race skill and confidence.

The success of Martin’s sessions is best measured by the repeat attendees, some of whom convert to club members. It takes a top person to attract top helpers and the Club is fortunate to have a willing band of ‘early risers’ to assist Martin in running the program.

Volunteers in the ‘tall’ category are highly valued and Max and Tim Heath were essential for moving boats on the penthouse level all season.

The shorter guys always make up for lack of size with intellect, and Scott has now taken on the job of systemised storage of spars and gear. And of course our Mr. Fixit, Pat Levy who always attends to the ribs and coaching, along with fellow coaches, including Pete Collie and James T.

And not to mention our Commodore and Craig who are regularly replacing gear and doing maintenance.

It requires many hands to make the unique program work, but the results are worthwhile and it is another example of what makes DBSC, such a great Club.

Ps. Congratulations to Martin who has been enthusiastically running the program for approximately 10 years.

Race report 8 April 2023

On Saturday the club held the annual 'Easter race around the harbour'.  The Easter Bunny cooked up a gusty 20 - 25 knot westerly, which made conditions tricky (and fun!) for the 12 sailors who competed.

The race was a handicapped start and some enthusiastic betting was placed by the on-water team of Tim Heath, Tory Epworth, Katie McHugh, James Tudball and David Airey.

Due to the wind strength, the course was slightly condensed, but we still had two great laps beating upwind towards Garden Island, round Clark Island, a screaming reach over to the YA buoy in Taylors Bay and another screaming reach down to Shark Island as the bottom mark.

Taylors Bay proved to be the biggest challenge of the day, with the wind coming from every single direction and ranging from 2 knots to 20 knots while the “Easter Bunny” dished out chocolate.  On the first lap, nearly every sailor suffered at least one capsize in the Taylors Bay trap.

With the chocolate egg supplies running low, the decision was made to shorten the course slightly and finish in Taylors Bay on the second lap.

Congratulations to Andrew Cox (who always relishes these 'chase down races') who was the overall winner of the race by just a few boat lengths, winning a bottle of fizz and a chocolate bunny.  Andrew (in a radial) pipped Luke "Bunny" Parker (in a standard) by just three boat lengths.  Healy Ryan was 4th over the line and first of the 4.7s.

Honourable mentions to Healy Ryan, Cormac Johnston and Jack Restuccia who sailed down from HHSC to race.  Another honourable mention goes to Craig Sheers, for rocking a beautiful shiny prototype carbon boom...and for achieving the most capsizes in Taylors Bay.

This coming weekend the club will hold Learn to Race and Pointscore heats 13 and 14.
