Lost... and found...

Guest User

Along with the bruises and lost pride, on Saturday some members lost property as well. Rob Bruce collected hats on the Dene Bergman, and these have been left on a bar table in the canteen area if anyone lost one of those…

Maxim Djura has lost blue optimum time OS3 watch somewhere in the men’s change room. Has anyone seen it?

Luke Parker has had someone switch booties on him. He now has a pair of Vaikobi booties drying on his boat. If you have lost these and have Luke’s booties, can you please switch them back?

Race report 15 October 2022

Guest User

From our PRO Steven London:

Over 20 Lasers turned out for a sunny and picturesque Saturday Sprint Racing on Sydney Harbour. The course was off Shark Island and into Rose Bay, with light shifty winds about 10 knots starting from the SE but soon shifted to the East. There were 4 sprint races about 20 minutes each, then the last race was a series of broad reaches back to the club house - up to the top mark, then Point Piper YA mark, over to the KFC and back home to the clubhouse.

Winners in the Standards included Yves Stening, Luke Parker, Andrew Simpson, and in the Radials, Alistair Sutherland, David Huber, and David Airey.

Thank you to our on water support Steven London (PRO), David Murphy (LTRaR), Keryyn Smith (COTD), David Devlin (CoCOTD) assisted by Derek Hand. We also had extra helpers out on the Start Boat Josh and Xander who cheered on "Zeider" (David Huber) and helped keep an eye on the start line to make sure we had no OCSs!

Thank you to the off-water team in the Canteen, Paul, and Shirley, assisted by Richard Au and Michael Osborne.

Volly of the week

Guest User

Double Bay Sailing Club is managed and run entirely by volunteers. As the saying goes, “many hands make light work. There is always work to be done in the upkeep of our shed and the ongoing running of dinghy racing.

This week we’d like to thank our resident architect, John Chesterman. John is always helping behind the scenes putting considerable efforts into current projects like the redesign of the Handicapping Table area which will include storage for a lot of the gear that currently sits on display on the floor or table, and also exciting future projects, like extensions to the clubhouse that are in the planning stages.

When not putting his fine drawing skills to the task of designing a new deck, he can be found with the hammer and chisel making repairs to the existing deck at our annual working bee. Thank you, John!

The club is full of people making wonderful contributions around the place, and sometimes behind the scenes. Let us know who deserves a mention!

This weekend

Guest User

We have a busy day at the club this Saturday with PRO training (with Hugh Leicester) and a training squad for The Women’s Regatta.

In the afternoon, DBSC will be hosting the first leg of our interclub with VYC.

There will be a BBQ on the deck afterwards with members of Vaucluse invited to join us. In the spirit of the event, we encourage all members race and stay around for the post-race festivities!

Wednesday twilight sailing

Guest User

Besides providing critical midweek salt water therapy, the twilight program will help all sailors with boat handling. Short, sharp races with boats in close quarters.

We aim to splash about 5pm and hold multiple quick races until there’s no one left. You’ll be very welcome if you can’t get there until 6pm.

We’ve found we are better locating to the north of Clarke Island because the CYCA racers start at the mouth of Double Bay and also use the Point Piper YA mark in their course. So, you’ll typically find us using the naval mooring (white can) off Clarke Island as one buoy.  We’ll nominate another buoy as the other mark. It could be the top or bottom depending on the breeze.

We use rabbit starts to get racing underway. Someone is volunteered to be the rabbit and they move below the bottom mark. When everyone else is settled, the rabbit signals they are on the move, the rabbit then rounds the bottom mark on port tack and heads upwind. All other racers cross close behind the rabbit on starboard and off they race. You need to be alert to get a good start.

Typically, it’s just one lap, a new rabbit is selected and away we go again. There’s very little waiting around. Hope to see you on the water.  Last week’s twilight sail was a treat. 10-15 knots from the northeast and a great course.

Luke Parker, Chief Twilight Cheerleader!

Congratulations to our regatta competitors!

Guest User

We’ve had a large contingent of members away at regattas recently.

Big congratulations go out to Evie Saunders (41), Sylvie Stannage (49), and Cote Poncell (75) who competed at the 2022 ILCA 6 Men's & Women's World Championships in Texas.

At Lake Macquarie we had a great contingent competing in the Coasts with great camaraderie on and off the water. Congratulations to all!

It's time to brush up on your PRO skills!

Guest User

Everyone at the club is rostered on to help with race management during the year. To ensure our race management is up to standard, the club has arranged training with Hugh Leicester at the club this weekend.

If your skills could do with a brush up, and let’s face it, we all have room for improvement, then this is your chance to learn from one of the best in the business!  Hugh has been running ILCA World Championships for 20 years, is the ILCA World Council Vice President, officiated at the Tokyo Olympics and is a finalist for the 2022 National Sailing Awards as Official of the Year.

Please confirm your attendance with Martin White by email or call Martin on 04106 27743.

Be at the club at 08:15 for a 08:30 start!

Sunday RIB driver(s) required

Guest User

John Vasey graciously helps DBSC fulfil our affiliation agreement with the 18s by supplying RIB support to their fleet every Sunday. John is unavailable to do so from 30 October until the end of the year, so we need volunteers to help out. If you have a boat licence and are interested in helping, please email the commodore ASAP <commodore@dbsc.com.au> and/or you can see the dates required and put your name against a day in this Google sheet HERE

The day goes from about 1pm to 5pm, and we have detailed instructions from John on what’s involved (also there are other support boats out there with you). It's a great day out on the harbour and you get a unique opportunity to see the 18 footers sailing close up. Thanks for your support!

Steven London, Commodore DBSC
