Our winter series returns to the club this weekend, on Sunday 24 July 2022.
In August, the club will be hosting sprint races on Saturday afternoons.
The club’s calendar can be subscribed to here (strongly recommended).
Last week all members should have received an email from our Secretary, Tory Epworth, with a link to a members’ survey.
This is the second time the club has conducted the survey. Your ideas and feedback from the 2017 survey resulted in tangible initiatives throughout the club, such as the Brett Beyer coaching sessions, the new boat hoist, improvements to how we manage and schedule races, as well as the greater strategic direction of the club.
Now is the time to take another ‘pulse-check’... The survey is short - with only 9 questions and should take 5-10 minutes to complete. The survey’s anonymous, but your response is vital to ensure that all members of the club have a voice. We’d love to get a 100% response rate from all members and look forward to sharing survey insights with you in the coming weeks.

The Women’s Regatta will be returning to Double Bay Sailing Club on Saturday 3 December 2022. The one-day event will include races on Sydney Harbour, great food, entertainment, and activities aimed at women of all ages who currently sail an ILCA / Laser dinghy, or who are looking to return to racing.
Double Bay Sailing Club will also run a series of small-group training clinics in the weeks leading up to the event, focusing on improving sailing skills such as race starts, upwind technique, and downwind technique.
“After the disruption of the past two years, it's fantastic to be hosting the Women's Regatta again, and to establish this as an annual event in our racing calendar,” said Tory Epworth, Secretary of Double Bay Sailing Club.
“As a club we are committed to increasing female participation in sailing, and events like this encourage female sailors from Sydney and beyond to come together and celebrate their ability, resilience, and love of sailing,” said Steven London, Commodore of Double Bay Sailing Club.

As you all know, the club has been pushing hard at sustainability initiatives and we now have a sustainability page on our website.
Last week we advised Vaikobi has partnered with Terracycle® for sailors, and ocean enthusiasts to send back or drop off their old gear and Brett Beyer has volunteered to help us return this gear to Vaikobi when we have a critical mass. In the meantime, hang onto it and we will put a call out at the start of the season.
If you have further suggestions on sustainability initiatives we should undertake, please contact our sustainability officer, Katie McHugh.
Congratulations to Evie Saunders, who has won a silver medal in the ILCA 6 class at the Allianz Youth Sailing World Championships in The Hague, The Netherlands.
The regatta was held in The Hague where the tides are quite extreme, so sailing there requires a 4th dimension of understanding.
Evie stated the regatta well with a win in the first race and held onto 2nd for the whole regatta. The last race was very tense with up to 6 countries a possible podium finish and Evie said, “yellow flags were being displayed everywhere - I just sailed the way I know how, start well, and play the shifts … and stay out of trouble.”
Evie is the first Australian radial girl to podium at the ISAF Worlds in more than a decade. We are so very proud, and we look forward to Evie showing us how it’s done when she returns to racing at Double Bay!

Powerboat safety is fundamental to our club’s operations. It is important to be aware of the safety responsibilities that come with the use and operation of powerboats at our club.
Australian Sailing has a powerboating program where you can learn basic power boat handling skills right up to assisting to retrieve the different styles of race craft on the water.
Some safety tips to remember when you’re out on a power boat and assisting race management:
• Know where the safety equipment is kept on board
• Do a safety briefing if you have another person on board
• Wear your lifejacket
• Have the kill cord attached to you when underway
• Know how to tow another boat, particularly the class that is racing
• Have the knowledge to rescue a boat in distress
