Double Bay Sailing Club is managed and run entirely by volunteers. As the saying goes, “many hands make light work. There is always work to be done in the upkeep of our shed and the ongoing running of dinghy racing.

This week we’d like to thank our volunteer of the financial year, Justin Davey, for the often invisible role as Treasurer. Justin puts in unrecognised hours, days, and possibly weeks in keeping the financial books in order, entering and deciphering where each dollar came from and where each dollar goes. This has become increasingly complex task as the club grows and introduces numerous online ways of paying for things, not to mention the accounting and accruals for many of the major projects the club undertakes. This is a year-round job, culminating in the presentation at our annual general meeting. We are so very grateful for this enormous effort.

The club is full of people making wonderful contributions around the place, and sometimes behind the scenes. Let us know who deserves a mention!

Thank you to the many people who have already nominated to take on a task in the club’s long list of duties. If you have yet to do so, can you please contact Kirk Marcolina, to discuss how best you can become involved.

Evie Saunders has been abroad, competing at Kiel Week, where she has placed an admirable 17th place in the Women’s ILCA 6 competition. Meanwhile sometimes Double Bay guest, Mara Stransky won the regatta.

From less far away, Richard George is scouting new sailing locations in Roebuck Bay, Broome where it is a sunny 30 degrees!

On Sunday we were lucky with another bright sunny day, the winter morning south westerly of 5-10 knots, fading in the final race, and an incoming tide. With some cloud and rain about, conditions were not entirely predictable, giving racers “room to think”.

Racing started half an hour later than usual, owing to a presentation at the club prior to racing (see article on recent grants, below).

The race management team of Peter Collie, David Huber, Kim Ketelby and Ryan Aldrich had their work cut out for them, shortening the course for each consecutive start.

The winners for the day were…

Standards

Championship: Race 1: Alexander Bijkerk; Race 2: Alexander Bijkerk; Race 3: Alexander Bijkerk

Pointscore: Race 1:  Tim Heath; Race 2: Nick Pellow; Race 3: Julian Taylor

Radials:

Championship: Race 1:  Brooke Wilson; 2: Quentin Burns; Race 3: Brooke Wilson

Pointscore: Race 1:  Kerryn Smith; Race 2: Daryl Lawrence; Race 3: Brooke Wilson

After racing we enjoyed tomato soup courtesy of Paul Adam, some sunshine on the deck and a lunchtime beer (for some).

Thanks to Peter Collie for the photos on Sunday.

Full results for both series are available on our website.

This week we’d like to thank Ian Tudball. Ian has assumed the role of sweeping the clubhouse under our distributed volunteering initiative, and was seen diligently sweeping the clubhouse after everyone went home on Sunday.

The club has been fortunate enough to receive some further grants from the NSW government and on Sunday local member, Gabrielle Upton, attended the club to meet with members and announce the latest grants the club has received.

Specifically, these grants are for:

  • Improvements to our race committee boat, the Jazzman;

  • Developing instructional videos for the club competency and safety program; and,

  • The Laser Sailing Expo (watch this space).

The Minister commented on the professionalism of the club and its committee, particularly noting the quality of the grant submissions (many thanks to Mark Crowhurst) and the ongoing relationship with the club committee and its focus on community engagement.

From our PRO on the day, Mike Dunne:

Brilliant, bright and beautiful…  The only way to describe another special morning on Sydney Harbour.

An amazing and interesting 45 degree oscillating westerly kept everyone on their toes for the three races. There was a good outgoing tide, variable wind from 10 to 20 knots building as the morning went on, with more pressure lanes on the right, and more consistent shifts to the left.  So..  Not a soldiers course.

There were 13 boats in total, with an even split across the two fleets.  No visitors on the day, just the local legends.  Some first time and deserved winners on the day.

It was challenging conditions and watching the racers trying to negotiate the best outcome by prioritising one of the three options at any time was interesting.  The snakes and ladders even at different times on the same leg made the event a winner.

The race management team of Mike Dunne, Yves Stenning, Thomas Beregi and Andrew Foote worked to set the best course for the conditions, the great news it was the same for everyone and the racing was good, with mixed results across both fleets.

The winners for the day were…

Standards

Championship: Race 1: Geoff Kirk; Race 2: Geoff Boscoe; Race 3: Mark Lewkovitz

Pointscore: Race 1:  Tim Heath; Race 2: Geoff Boscoe; Race 3: Steven London

Radials:

Championship: Race 1:  Andrew Cox Race; 2: Kate McHugh; Race 3: Andrew Cox

Pointscore: Race 1:  Daryl Lawrence; Race 2: Daryl Lawrence; Race 3: Andrew Cox

The soup, as always along with a well-deserved hot shower was a pleasure
